About Mithila Dairy

During the 70’s, milk from the poor producers was procured by the Barauni Creamer through vendors engaged by Dairy Co-operative Societies (DCS) which were organized & functioning on the conventional system till 1973-74, the system continued under the aegis of the Dairy Development Department of the govt. of Bihar.

Thereafter, it was taken over by the Bihar State Dairy Corporation and subsequently, with the formation of the Bihar State Co-operative Milk producer’s Federation Ltd. (COMFED) in 1983-84, all procuring/chilling units were taken over by COMFED on management basis.

The Mithila Milk Union comprising the Samastipur Milkshed, with its area of operation covering Samastipur, Darbhanga & Madhubani districts came into existence on 14-09-87 under the Operation Flood Programme of Govt. of India, whereby it has been designated as the implementing agency of the Dairy Development Programme in the three districts on the lines of Anand pattern, & was registered under the Bihar State Co-operative Societies Act 1935 as Mithila Dugdh Utpadak Sahkari Sangh Ltd.

Thus, starting from the Milk Chilling Centre, Tajpur with a handling capacity of 10000 LPD ,the Union today owns & manages the Chilling Centre at Rosera (20,000 LPD capacity), the Packing station-cum-Processing Plant at Darbhanga (50,000 LPD) & the full fledged Dairy at Samastipur (250000 LPD) , which was installed in the year 1999 with an initial capacity of 40000 LPD with the financial assistance of DRDA, Samastipur. with the financial assistance from NCDC Milk Union expanded processing facility from 40.00 TLPD to 1.0 LLPD in the year 1999 was subsequently expanded to 2.50 LLPD in the year 2010. During the year 2003 Milk Union got ISO-9001:2000 and HACCP (IS-15000) certification by Bureau of Indian Standards. With a view to production of clean milk at the farmers level milk union has established Bulk Milk Coolers at the society level. So far 55 BMC of mainly 5 KL has been established at DCS level under RSVY/RKVY being implemented by the Govt. of Bihar.

The Union is managed by an elected Board of Directors comprising of an elected Chairman & the eleven farmer-members belonging to the DCS at village - level , the Managing Director recruited by the Board , the representatives of COMFED & the National Dairy Development Board .

The Union is involved in the growth of production in each stage : starting from the organization of Dairy Cooperative Society , arranging milk collection at village-level & paying remunerative price on the basis of quantity (kg) and quality ( as percentage kg SNF/FAT), enhancing milk production through supply of balanced cattle feed & fodder seeds , by-pass protein feed, mineral mixtures, calcium etc. at the door-steps of the farmers daily on no-loss-no profit basis through milk transport vehicles , providing technical inputs like artificial insemination services through trained self-employed A.I. workers of the same village, organizing veterinary health camps on a regular basis which cover disease-control measures through first aid, vaccination, deworming, etc., and is involved in the transfer of technologies and awareness among the producer-members through different extension media/methods with a view to enhancing milk-production & procurement thus improving the socio-economic scenario in rural areas on a sustainable basis .

Through its dedicated efforts, the Union presently procures an average 355000 LPD milk from its producer farmers .On the other hand, pasteurized milk is marketed in the urban areas of Samastipur, Darbhanga & Madhubani districts totalling an average sale of 156000 LPD ,the surplus milk being supplied to the marketing dairies of Jharkhand and mother dairy Delhi. Presently, the Union markets pouch-filled liquid milk. It is well-equipped for quick & efficient milk-reception, processing, quality control & storage, and is committed to timely supply of safe milk to its esteemed customers.Also, milk products like peda, kalakand, Paneer, Rasogulla, Gulabjamun, Butter, Lassi, Misti Dahi etc. are marketed on behalf of sister unions through the milk outlets with a view to creating a wider customer-base & a stronger brand loyalty .
